Thiruvananthapuram: A rare variety of mango grown on the Kerala University campus at Palayam here was named after the university. KU mango alias Kerala University mango, the delicious mango variety is not found anywhere else, claim the researchers.
The Centre for Biodiversity Conservation identified the uniqueness of the 150-year-long old mango tree as part of the research on indigenous Mango trees in Kerala. Interestingly, a single mango on this tree weighs a kilo.
Kerala University Vice-Chancellor Prof V Mahadevan Pillai has named the mango after the university during an event held at the senate chamber.
Dickson, driver of the VC, informed the Centre for Biodiversity Conservation director Dr A Gangaprasad and researcher Manoj about the uniqueness of the mango tree.
The university has decided to produce more grafts of the mango tree for distribution.
