Malappuram: Union aviation minister Jyotiraditya Scindia clarified that the suggestion to reduce the length of the runway of Kozhikode International Airport is not final.

Shrinking the runway could help in increasing the Runway End Safety Area. The suggestion was made following the plane crash of Air India Express Flight 1344 in August 2020.

Scindia, in a letter, told the airport advisory committee chairman and MP Abdussamad Samadani that the suggestion was not final. The MP had raised the concern that it will hamper resuming the service of large flights. Minister also said that a committee has been constituted to study the safety report prepared following the accident. The committee is also entrusted to check if the airport is ready to resume the service of large aircraft. It is yet to submit the report.

KIA is a table-top airport, and there are limitations to the development of the airport.
