Kozhikode: The Fisheries Department has seized two boats and imposed fines totalling ₹3.4 lakh for engaging in illegal fishing using banned nets and high-voltage lighting equipment at local harbours, officials said on Sunday.
The boats — Love Mary and Shivadam — were intercepted during separate patrols on Saturday.
A team led by V. Suneera, Assistant Director of the Beypore Fisheries Station, detained Love Mary while patrolling the Beypore harbour area after discovering that it was using high-voltage lights for fishing. A fine of ₹90,000 was levied on the boat’s owner.
In a separate operation near Puthiyappa harbour, officials seized Shivadam for employing banned nets and failing to use the mandatory square mesh cod end. The boat, taken into custody by Fisheries Extension Officer Shyam Chand, was fined ₹2.5 lakh, officials said.
Marine Enforcement Sub-Inspector of Guard T. K. Rajesh, Fisheries Head Guard M. K. Haridasan, and Fisheries Guards M. Bibin, Y. Jeendas, and K. Arun also took part in the patrol operations at both harbours.
