Ponkunnam: Even in death, he chose to be different—just as he was throughout his life. Those attending the funeral of beloved "Kochupappan," VT Antony of Vattakuzhy House in Elampally, on Monday will hear a heartfelt message of gratitude—in his own voice.

Anticipating the day, Antony had recorded a thank-you message in advance and entrusted it to his son, Jomon. The audio will be played at his residence and later at the Neyyattussery Church Parish Hall during the funeral service.

VT Antony (93), a farmer from Elampally, passed away on Saturday. Though he had only a school-level education, he transformed his life experiences into knowledge, authoring three books that document the history and social life of regions including Anickad, Elampally, and Pallikkathode.

To make his books more engaging, Antony dressed up as characters from the past he wrote about. While describing old Onam celebrations, farming practices, customs and traditions, he posed in various costumes—as a farmer, bonded labourer, landlord, Brahmin, chenda drummer, and several other roles—bringing history vividly to life through photographs.

He had also drawn public attention during the last local body elections by preparing a questionnaire for candidates contesting from his ward. Until a few months ago, he personally looked after the farming activities on his homestead.

His mortal remains will be brought to his residence at 8 am on Monday. Public homage will begin in the morning at the Parish Hall of St George Church, Neyyattussery, followed by the funeral at 2 pm.
