CCTV footage from 2024 has surfaced showing a pregnant woman being assaulted by a Circle Inspector (CI) at Ernakulam North Police Station. The footage was provided to the complainant following a High Court order.

The incident occurred on June 20, 2024. A man had filmed two individuals being beaten by police in a public place. The police, upon receiving the footage, took the man into custody and brought him to the station. It was then that the pregnant woman (wife of man taken into custody) arrived at the station and was reportedly assaulted by Prathapachandran. The video clearly shows the officer pushing her and striking her in the face.

The complainant stated that it took a year of struggle to obtain the footage. She alleged that the police, despite knowing she was pregnant, collectively assaulted her and attempted to cover up the incident. At the time, the police denied the allegations, claiming that the woman had dragged her infant children to the station and that the police were only intervening to resolve the situation. The police also claimed that the CI was assaulted by the complainant.

Despite repeated requests from the complainant and her husband for the release of the CCTV footage, no action was taken, prompting them to approach the court.

The footage has now reignited calls for accountability and a thorough investigation into the actions of the police officers involved.
