Payyanur (Kerala): Two Jan Shatabdi trains operating in Kerala are set to lose their Superfast status, effective from January 1. Superfast trains are expected to maintain an average speed of 55 km/h or higher. Indian Railways monitors trains experiencing speed reductions before reclassifying them as standard Express services. Railways recently withdrew the Superfast status of around 10 trains across India, including Garib Rath services.

With the removal of the Superfast classification, the supplementary surcharge levied on these services, ranging from ₹15 to ₹45, will be dropped. The current sitting reservation fare from Kannur to Thiruvananthapuram stands at ₹235, which will drop to ₹220 once the Superfast tag is removed. Similarly, AC Chair Car fares will decrease from ₹780 to ₹735.

Certain Intercity trains retain Superfast status

Not all Intercity trains running in Kerala operate as standard Expresses; some are classified as Superfast. For instance, the Mangaluru–Coimbatore Intercity (22609) levies Superfast fares, whereas the Kannur–Ernakulam Intercity Express (16306) does not charge a Superfast supplementary fee.
