Thiruvananthapuram: The State Government has decided to distribute welfare pensions for the months of March and April ahead of the upcoming elections.

Distribution of the April pension is scheduled to begin on March 31. The government has clarified that the early disbursement of the April instalment is being conducted in view of the Vishu festival. The aim is to complete the distribution process before the commencement of polling.

It had previously been decided that the March pension would be disbursed starting from the 25th. Funds for both months were sanctioned before the Election Model Code of Conduct came into effect. Beneficiaries are expected to receive approximately ₹3,200–₹4,000 in total for the two-month period.

Socio-economic context

The decision to fast-track pension payments comes at a critical juncture as Kerala enters a high-stakes election cycle. By releasing the funds now, the administration bypasses the bureaucratic hurdles that often arise once the Model Code of Conduct is fully operational, ensuring that the approximately 62 lakh beneficiaries—including the elderly and those with disabilities—do not face a financial vacuum during the election period.

From a practical standpoint, the move is also tied to the state's peak spending season. With Vishu approaching, the demand for liquidity among low-income households typically increases.
