The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned that heavy rainfall will continue to affect parts of Kerala on Friday (August 7), with several districts remaining under weather alerts. The department has advised people to stay vigilant as persistent rain could trigger localised flooding, waterlogging, landslides and flash floods in vulnerable areas.

The latest forecast indicates that weather conditions will remain active over the coming days. However, the IMD has noted that warnings are based on evolving weather patterns and may be revised depending on changing conditions.

Orange alert for eight districts on Friday

The IMD has issued an orange alert for Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod on Friday (August 7), indicating the likelihood of very heavy rainfall at isolated places.

According to the IMD, very heavy rainfall refers to 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm of rain within 24 hours.

Yellow alert to continue on Friday and Saturday

A yellow alert remains in force for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur and Palakkad on Friday (August 7).

For Saturday (August 8), the IMD has issued a yellow alert for Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Ernakulam, Idukki, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod.

A yellow alert indicates the possibility of heavy rainfall at isolated places, with 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm of rain expected within 24 hours.

Risk of flooding and landslides

The IMD has cautioned that intense spells of rain over short durations could lead to flash floods, rapid runoff in hilly regions and waterlogging in urban and low-lying areas. As rain continues over successive days, the risk of landslides and mudslides may also increase in vulnerable locations.

The public has been urged to remain alert and follow instructions issued by local authorities, while government agencies continue to monitor the evolving weather situation.

As weather systems remain dynamic, the IMD may update or revise district-wise alerts in the coming days depending on changes in rainfall intensity and associated conditions.
