Vadakara (Kerala): The Vadakara Municipality Health Department on Friday ordered the closure of Ceeyam Hospital following reports of jaundice among residents in the area. Approximately 15 people living near the hospital have reportedly contracted jaundice, with water contamination linked to high levels of ammonia and coliform bacteria suspected as the cause.

Residents sent their well water for testing, revealing increased ammonia levels and the presence of coliform bacteria. Acting on the complaints, health officials inspected the area and found that polluted water from a treatment plant was being discharged through a pipe.

Additionally, a well situated within the slab-tiled area in front of the hospital's pharmacy was found to be used for hospital purposes. The notice was issued to transfer the patients within 48 hours and establish adequate waste disposal systems. However, compliance with these directives remains pending.

The hospital has since suspended its outpatient services, and the Kerala State Pollution Control Board has conducted an inspection of the site. The Municipal Health Department is awaiting the board's report to determine further action.
