Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government is considering a proposal to reduce the distance between toddy shops and places of worship as well as schools from 400 meters to 200 meters. The toddy sector has long been demanding the same relaxation that was granted to bars. The draft liquor policy, presented in the Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, was put on hold for further deliberation.

Some ministers have expressed concerns about the high distance restrictions imposed specifically on toddy shops. They argue that such limits could hinder the survival of the toddy sector, particularly in the context of new initiatives to introduce modernised toddy shops. These new outlets, which will feature luxurious facilities, are being targeted at tourists, and the project is currently in its final stages.

The draft liquor policy, which came for discussion on Wednesday, had been delayed due to allegations that bar owners have been attempting to collect money for the government to avoid dry days.
