Haripad, Alappzuha: A 19-year-old student allegedly gave birth inside the toilet of a government hospital in Kerala’s Haripad and threw the newborn out through a ventilator opening. The baby was rescued alive after hospital staff quickly noticed faint cries coming from outside the building.

The incident happened around 1 am on Tuesday at the Haripad Government Hospital, where the young woman had reportedly arrived seeking treatment for stomach pain.

According to hospital authorities, the newborn was saved due to the timely intervention of doctors and staff on night duty, including Dr Tisha, Dr Alfy, nursing officer Jisha, and nursing assistants Anil and Regina.

Doctors said they heard faint crying sounds from outside shortly after the student entered the toilet. Suspecting something unusual, the medical staff immediately searched the surrounding area and found the baby outside the building.

The infant had allegedly been thrown through a ventilator opening of the building housing the toilet. The hospital surroundings were also said to be frequented by stray dogs, making the situation extremely dangerous.

Hospital staff said even a slight delay in locating the child could have put the baby’s life at serious risk.

The doctors confirmed that the newborn, a baby girl, did not suffer any injuries and is currently in stable condition. Both the mother and child were provided primary treatment before being shifted to the Alappuzha Medical College Hospital for specialised care.
