Thiruvananthapuram: Police action will be taken against those who obstruct the functioning of ABC (Animal Birth Control) centres that sterilise stray dogs. Offenders will be charged under sections that carry a maximum penalty of three months' imprisonment, a fine of up to Rs 500, or both.

To deal with troublemakers and ensure public order, provisions that grant executive magistrates preventive powers will also be invoked. These measures aim to curb resistance and protests against ABC centres. The decision is meant to address individuals who oppose or hinder the operations of these centres.

Currently, there are 17 permanent ABC centres in operation, and 13 more are in the final stages of construction. Local bodies will soon receive special guidelines permitting to euthanise dogs suffering from rabies or other severe illnesses.

From September 2024 to March 31 of this year:

  • 11,193 stray dogs were sterilised across grama panchayats and municipalities.
  • 93,495 stray dogs received anti-rabies vaccinations.
