Kochi: A violent clash broke out during the closing ceremony of the Kerala State School Sports meet, following a dispute over the awarding of points. The argument escalated into pushing and shoving between students and police personnel.
The incident happened while General Education Minister V. Sivankutty and Sports Minister V. Abdurahiman were present at the event. In the wake of the ruckus, police quickly escorted the ministers to safety.
The conflict began when the official points table showed Kadakassery Ideal EHSS at the top with 80 points, followed by Navamukunda HSS Thirunnavaya (44 points) and Mar Basil High School Kothamangalam (43 points) in second and third place, respectively. However, the second position was controversially awarded to GV Raja Sports School, igniting protests from students, teachers, and parents alike.
Protesters accused the police of beating and using force to disperse the crowd. The students even claimed that the police threatened them by saying "If there was no media, we would have shown you."
One student spoke out, saying, "We trained for a year and a half under the sun and rain. Only after we get what we deserve we will leave. We’re not begging for something, we are asking for what we’ve earned. They even attacked our coach and students and threatened disqualification. What kind of law is this?"
