New Delhi: According to the latest report by Niti Aayog, Kerala has emerged as the top-performing state in the health sector in the Covid year 2020-21.
The state secured the first position in the annual health index for 2020-21 among the 19 'larger states'. Tamil Nadu and Telangana earned the second and third positions, respectively. On the other hand, Bihar (19), Uttar Pradesh (18), and Madhya Pradesh (17) rank at the bottom of the list. It is worth noting that Kerala also secured the first position in last year's report.

Among the small states, Tripura claimed the top spot, followed by Sikkim and Goa in second and third place, respectively. Arunachal Pradesh (sixth), Nagaland (seventh), and Manipur (eighth) rank at the bottom of the list. Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, and Odisha exhibited improved performance compared to previous years. Lakshadweep topped the Union Territories list, while Delhi came last.
The health index is calculated based on 24 indicators, including neonatal mortality rate, sex ratio at birth, and immunisation coverage. Since 2017, NITI Aayog has employed this methodology to assess the health index, considering both year-on-year progress and overall performance. The index was developed in collaboration with the Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and the World Bank.
