Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Government has issued an order detailing the formation of a special commando wing to tackle anti-terrorism activities, commando operations, VIP protection and providing security to strategic centres. The unit will focus on urban areas.
Termed 'Avengers', the unit will act as a city-based commando force and falls under the Thunderbolt Commando unit of Counter-Terrorism Squad.
The unit will be deployed initially in Thiruvananthapuram, Kochi and Kozhikode districts. The state police chief had sought approval from the home department to set up the unit.
The unit will receive 120 commandos from Indian Reserve Battalion. The team will have a special uniform. Further, the unit will likely be used to provide security to Chief Minister.
