Kottayam: Kerala Police officials will now be required to submit a signed affidavit to their superiors before using social media. They must also disclose the WhatsApp, Telegram and other social media accounts they are members of.

The directive, issued by the state police chief, makes it clear that violations will result in disciplinary action. A special form has been prepared by the police headquarters for submitting the affidavit, and officers’ social media accounts and messaging group activity will be monitored by the state intelligence department.

The order follows concerns that certain social media posts by police personnel had tarnished the image of the force and the government, prompting several complaints.

The affidavit requires officials to confirm that:

  • They post and comment on social media only in accordance with the police code of conduct.
  • The users will not engage in activities that harm the image, dignity or integrity of the police force and will maintain the standards expected of law enforcers.
  • Official and confidential documents will not be shared, forwarded or circulated.
  • The user must understand that disciplinary action will be taken if any of the above is violated.

Affidavits must be submitted to the respective station inspector.
The order also instructs inspectors to notify the District Police Chief when leaving their station limits.
