Thiruvananthapuram:The Kerala Police helicopter lease is set to expire today, September 19, with the state government yet to take a final decision on whether to renew the contract. The renewal proposal has been recommended by the Director General of Police (DGP) and has been sent to Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan for a final decision.

The helicopter has been leased from Chipson Aviation for the past three years. Under the existing agreement, the government pays around Rs 80 lakh per month for up to 25 hours of flying time. Additional charges apply when the helicopter is used beyond the agreed flying limit, while the contract also contains provisions concerning unused flying hours.

The helicopter has been used for VVIP travel, organ transportation, anti-Maoist operations and emergency responses during natural disasters. These operational requirements are likely to be among the factors considered by the government before deciding whether to continue the lease.

If the existing contract is not renewed, the government could arrange helicopters from private operators whenever required. However, emergency hiring could involve higher costs and may not always guarantee immediate availability during disasters or other urgent situations.

The renewal proposal is being processed through the Home Department, with the final decision resting with Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan. The decision is expected after his return from Delhi.

The helicopter arrangement has also previously faced political criticism over its cost. The current government will therefore have to weigh the regular monthly expenditure of maintaining the lease against the operational advantage of having a helicopter available for official and emergency requirements.

The decision will determine whether Kerala continues with a dedicated helicopter lease or moves towards hiring aircraft only when required.
