Kannur: The murder of SFI worker Dheeraj caused quite a stir in his hometown and the way people in his locality reacted to his murder surpassed political differences and upheld the values of human relations.

Kannur Trichambaram native Dheeraj Rajendran was stabbed to death at Government Engineering College on January 10, allegedly by his political opponents in Youth Congress.

However, Trichambaram native T V Vijayan, who gave away eight cents of land without raising any conditions for erecting a memorial of Dheeraj, is a member of a family with no ties with CPM. His father Mayiladan Karunakaran was infact a Congress leader.

On the night of Dheeraj’s murder, Minister M V Govindan and other leaders interfered in the matter and requested the landowner Vijayan to sell the land to the party for building Dheeraj’s memorial.

Vijayan named a rate for the plot considering the party’s wish. Dheeraj’s body was cremated on this plot.

Dheeraj’s father Rajendran is a Congress sympathiser. His mother Pushkala is a nurse and a Left union member. Dheeraj's brother Adwaith is a member of SFI and DYFI. Dheeraj became a student leader after getting into college.

It may be noted that his natives reacted sans political differences at a time when the state Congress leaders made controversial statements regarding the murder of Dheeraj.
