Piravom: The death of Sreerag, a 36-year-old native of Thevalakkara in Kollam, has been confirmed following a boat accident in Mozambique.

Sreerag, son of a couple, Radhakrishnan and Sheela from Naduvilakkara, Kollam, was among the passengers when the boat capsized off the coast of Beira in central Mozambique.

Family members and Kollam MP N.K. Premachandran was informed about Sreerag’s death by the Shipping Director General.

Sreerag worked as an electro officer with the Italy-based Scorpio Shipping Company.

The ill-fated boat was carrying a 21-member crew to a ship anchored near the port. Fifteen people were rescued, including one from Ranni in Pathanamthitta district, Kerala. Sreerag’s body was among those recovered at the accident site.

Five Indians are still missing in the incident, including another Malayali, Indrajith, a resident of Piravom in Ernakulam district.

"A launch boat carrying crew members of a tanker, including 14 Indian nationals, capsized during crew transfer operations off Beira port in central Mozambique. Some of the Indian nationals involved in the accident have been rescued. Unfortunately, some Indian nationals have died in the accident, and some are still unaccounted for," the High Commission said in an earlier statement.

The Indian High Commission said that it is closely monitoring the situation and remains in constant touch with the local officials and the families of those affected.
