Gopinath Muthukad bid farewell to professional magic with an emotional show in Kozhikode, paying tribute to his late father. The magician announced he will now focus on uplifting differently-abled children

Kozhikode: When magician Gopinath Muthukad opened his magic bag on Friday, it was more than a display of tricks; it was a heartfelt homage to his father, who shaped his life. His 'Illusion to Inspiration' show at Providence College, Kozhikode, served as a tribute to his late father, Kunjunni Nair, who supported him when he left law school to pursue magic.
Muthukad, who first performed in Kozhikode in 1987 wearing a magic hat and a glittering shirt, announced during the event that he would no longer perform paid professional shows. He later clarified that he would continue to appear in non-commercial performances, a decision made after receiving an outpouring of affection from fans concerned by reports of his retirement.
The evening blended wonder and nostalgia as each trick reflected milestones in his four-decade career and the unwavering support of his parents and teachers. The programme started with his mother, Devakiyamma, lighting the ceremonial lamp.
“When I decided to quit law school, the whole world was against me. Only my father stood by me,” Muthukad said, his voice breaking.
Beyond honouring his father, the magician used the occasion to outline his new mission, improving the lives of children with disabilities. He announced plans for the International Institute for People with Disabilities in Kasaragod, envisioned as a global stage for showcasing their talents.
The event was inaugurated by renowned magician P. C. Sorcar Jr and attended by dignitaries, including MP P V Abdul Wahab, MLA Thottathil Raveendran, Northern Region Inspector General Rajpal Meena, Mathrubhumi Chairman and Managing Editor P V Chandran, Kozhikode Archbishop Dr Varghese Chakkalakkal, Thamarassery Bishop Mar Remigiose Inchananiyil and businessman Gokulam Gopalan.
