Historic win for UDF in Kollam Corporation elections, ending LDF's 25-year reign

Kollam, Kerala: In a historic political shift in Kollam, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) wrested control of the Kollam Corporation, ending over 25 years of uninterrupted rule by the CPM-led Left Democratic Front (LDF).
Out of the 56-member council, the UDF secured 27 seats, comfortably surpassing the LDF’s 16, while the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) captured 12 seats, and one went to others.
Voting in Kollam took place in the first phase on December 9, alongside Thiruvananthapuram, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Alappuzha, Idukki and Ernakulam.
The second phase on December 11 involved Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Wayanad, Kozhikode, Kannur and Kasaragod.
Strong turnout across Kollam
Kollam registered a turnout of 70.09 per cent on December 9. This included 68.8 per cent male participation and 71.2 per cent female participation. The 2020 election recorded a turnout of 66.06 per cent.
Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki and Ernakulam also crossed the 70 per cent mark, placing them among the districts with the strongest participation in the first phase of voting.

Kollam has been governed by the Left Democratic Front ever since the corporation was formed in 2000.
- LDF: 39 seats (CPM: 29, CPI: 10)
- UDF: 9 seats (Congress: 6, RSP: 3)
- NDA: 6 seats
