Kochi: The Kerala High Court on Wednesday dismissed a petition from Asha Lawrence, the youngest daughter of late CPM veteran leader M.M. Lawrence, opposing the donation of his body to a medical college. Asha had requested that the last rites for Lawrence’s remains be conducted according to religious customs, but the court rejected her appeal.
Background of the Case
Previously, the court had ordered the preservation of Lawrence’s body until a decision was reached regarding the petition. Lawrence's son also expressed his willingness to donate the body for medical study, prompting the court to rule in favour of this decision.
Court’s Final Ruling
The court had previously instructed the principal of the medical college to make a determination regarding the body. After reviewing arguments from Asha and others, the principal agreed to accept the body. Asha subsequently challenged this decision in the High Court, which has now dismissed her petition.
With this ruling, all obstacles to the donation of M.M. Lawrence's body to Kalamassery Medical College have been resolved.
