Kochi: Against the backdrop of Wayanad landslides, the Kerala High Court has said that environmental auditing should be done all over Kerala to avoid natural calamities. 

In a suo motu petition over the Wayanad disaster, the High Court Division Bench, comprising Justice A K Jayasankaran Nambiar and Justice V M Shyam Kumar, put forward this proposal. Following this, Advocate General K Gopalakrishna Kurup sought time to convey the government's position on the matter. The HC also appointed senior advocate Ranjit Thampan as amicus curiae to assist the court in the petition. The court said that the matter will be heard every Friday.

The court also directed to issue notices to National Center for Earth Science Studies, Geological Survey of India, Survey of India, Union Ministry of Science and Technology, State Environment Impact Authority etc to implead in the case. 

The court said that before implementing the development plans, it is necessary to study how it will affect nature. The court also opined that there is no coordination between government departments in this regard. In response to this, the Advocate General explained that except for two districts, all other districts are facing the threat of landslides. The court said that a detailed study is required in this regard beyond general statements. 

Geo mapping is also required, the court opined. It will also help in policy formulation of the government. It should be clearly demarcated in which area construction activities can be permitted and where it cannot be permitted. The amicus curiae was also directed to give a comprehensive report on these matters.
