Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of heavy rain and strong winds in parts of Kerala over the next three hours.

According to an alert issued at 2:30 a.m. on Sunday, heavy rainfall is likely in Idukki, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts. The IMD also warned of strong winds accompanying the rain.

The authorities said heavy showers could lead to waterlogging on roads and poor visibility for riders, increasing the risk of traffic congestion. Low-lying areas and riverbanks may also face the threat of flooding.

Strong winds could uproot trees, resulting in power outages and other hazards. Partial damage to houses and temporary structures is also possible, while hilly regions remain vulnerable to landslides and mudslides.

People have been advised to avoid non-essential travel and remain in safe locations until weather conditions improve. The authorities have also urged the public to follow advisories issued by the IMD and the State Disaster Management Authority.

The KSDMA also advised people in disaster-prone areas to ensure that relief camps had been opened in their localities and to move to them during the daytime if necessary.

It urged people living in weak or unsafe houses to remain cautious in view of the possibility of strong winds and shift to safer places if required.

The authority cautioned people against entering rivers, streams and other water bodies for bathing, fishing or crossing during the heavy rain.

It advised the public not to gather on bridges or attempt to take photographs or selfies near overflowing water bodies.
