Kollam: In a surprising development, the Kerala government has drastically reduced the food allowance for NCC (National Cadet Corps) cadets in schools to just Rs 20 per head. Previously, the allowance was Rs 60 per cadet on parade days.
There are concerns about how expenses for providing lunch, snacks, and other light food to the cadets can be covered with only Rs 20 per head. Similarly, the allowance for college students has been cut to Rs 40 per head, down from Rs 120.
Although a formal order has not yet been issued, the decision has been communicated to lower-ranking officials in the concerned departments.
On parade days, the state government covers the food expenses. For other expenditures, 75 percent is funded by the central government, with the remaining 25 percent covered by the state government.
There are approximately 1 lakh NCC cadets in the state.
