Kozhikode: Activists of the Students' Federation of India (SFI) staged a protest against the Chancellor of varsities in the state and Governor Arif Muhammad Khan in the wake of his visit to Calicut University on Wednesday. Khan was at the university to lay the foundation stone for the Sanatana Dharma Peetham chair. Activists placed a black banner on the barricade with the message, “Sangi Chancellor, go back,” which roughly translates to mean that a pro-saffron party person should go back.
The SFI has announced that their protest is against the recent reappointment of Mohanan Kunnummal as Vice-Chancellor of the Kerala University of Health Sciences (KUHS).
Police presence was tightened at Calicut University to manage security and prevent any disruptions during the Governor’s visit. They intervened and removed the protestors.
Meanwhile, Khan reacted to the protest by saying that he empathises with them, but violence is not acceptable in a democracy.
