Kochi: A Malayali designer has earned international recognition with her work on the medal design for next year’s Youth Olympic Games to be held in Senegal. Elizuba Joe Abraham, a native of Kadavanthra–Chilavannoor in Ernakulam, secured third place for her medal design. She was selected from among applicants across the world.

The fourth Youth Olympic Games will take place in Dakar, Senegal, from October 31 to November 13, 2026.

This will be the first Olympic event to be held on African soil. The official motto of the Games is “Africa welcomes, Dakar celebrates”. Taking this theme into account, Elizuba said she based her medal design on the concept of “The celebration of triumph”.

First place was awarded to a design by María Pilar Barbadillo Vicario of Spain, while second place went to Agisilaos Kyriazis of Greece. This is the first time that a medal design award for an international sporting event organised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has reached India.

Elizuba, a graduate in design from the Kerala State Institute of Design (KSID), Kollam, is currently preparing for higher studies. She is the daughter of Joe Abraham, who works in advertising design, and Dr Sheeba Joy, an Ayurvedic physician. Her sister is Gracia Mariam Joe.
