Kottayam: Following controversy over his earlier remarks made during a speech at Munambam in connection with the agitation of the Munambam Land Protection Committee, Kerala Congress (J) (an ally of the opposition UDF) leader and MP Francis George has clarified that he did not say that he or his party would support the Waqf Amendment Bill in Parliament.

Speaking to reporters in Kottayam on Thursday, George described as “absurd” the campaign claiming he would vote for the BJP in Parliament. He emphasized that the Waqf Board’s operations must be transparent, and in cases of disagreements, there should be an appeal process above the tribunal level. He also said that both he and his party are committed to ensuring that issues like these are resolved through the judicial system, without infringing on a citizen's fundamental rights.

“I will either oppose or support the bill based on its specifics,” George said. He made it clear that he would oppose any provision in the bill that seeks to include people of other religions in the Waqf Board and would also reject provisions that undermine the protection of Waqf properties.

“At a time when minorities need to remain united, particularly given the ongoing issues in Manipur, it’s important that we don’t create divisions among them,” he added. George clarified that his opinion was expressed with good intentions and urged that there should be no misunderstanding.

Earlier, Francis George had reportedly stated that he fully supports the Waqf Amendment Bill. He had mentioned that both as a public representative and a political party leader, he agreed with the provisions of the new Waqf law. This position was reportedly conveyed during a relay hunger strike organised by the Munambam Land Protection Committee.

George reiterated his firm stance that natural justice must be ensured in Munambam without any compromise. He also stressed that when the bill is discussed, they will take a strong position on these issues, believing that it could lead to a permanent solution. Furthermore, he urged the central government not to back down under pressure and to continue presenting the bill.
