Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan on Wednesday stated that no decision has been made regarding his candidacy in the 2026 Assembly elections. Responding to queries at a press conference in Thiruvananthapuram, Vijayan affirmed that the Communist Party of India (Marxist) [CPI(M)] would determine and announce the decision at the appropriate time.
"Whether I will contest or not... no decision has been taken so far. The party has a defined stance on this, and at the appropriate time, the party itself will make the decision clear," Vijayan said.
The statement comes after Trinamool Congress leader P V Anvar, during a TV debate, declared his willingness to contest against Vijayan in the Dharmadam constituency, subject to approval from the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF). Anvar, a former Nilambur MLA who recently joined the Trinamool Congress, was previously affiliated with the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF).
Anvar's Allegations Against the Government
Anvar criticised the state government, levelling various allegations against the Chief Minister's office, including claims involving Vijayan’s political secretary, P Sasi. Addressing these accusations, Vijayan dismissed them as politically motivated.
"He [Anvar] might have his own intentions. If these matters are helpful for that, let it be so. But there's no need to use me or my office for it," the Chief Minister said.
Government's Tough Stand on Crimes Against Women
The Chief Minister also commented on the swift action taken against jeweller Boby Chemmanur after allegations of sexual harassment were raised by actress Honey Rose. He reiterated his government's firm position on addressing crimes against women.
"If there is any crime against women, the government will take very strong action. Neither the social standing of the individual nor their financial status will be considered in such cases. The government's message is unambiguous," Vijayan emphasised.
This decisive action underscores the state government's commitment to ensuring justice and safeguarding women.
