Kottayam: BJP leader PC George has come under fire for comments dismissing Mahatma Gandhi’s role in India’s independence, claiming the country did not gain freedom through Gandhi’s efforts or generosity. His remarks, made during a YouTube interview, have drawn widespread criticism for their disrespectful tone towards the Father of the Nation.
The comments have landed George in yet another controversy, adding to his long track record of foul language, regressive and misogynist statements, and legal troubles such remarks.
Controversial statements
In the interview, George questioned Gandhi’s significance in India’s freedom struggle, saying:
“Is Mahatma Gandhi a divine king? The British left as they were devoid of anything (resources) while ruling. Don’t say foolish things like Gandhi fought to get it. Gandhi did not do anything. When did he come? He went to Africa and got kicked. Here, no one kicked...Did the British leave because of salt satyagraha? It was because the British wanted to leave.”
The remarks have prompted outrage across political and social circles, with many denouncing the comments as historically inaccurate and disrespectful.
Opposition responds
Kerala’s opposition leader V.D. Satheesan responded sharply, dismissing George’s claims:
“He never said that PC George gave India independence. Consider it our good fortune.”
