Alappuzha: The Alappuzha District Police Chief has submitted a report to the State Police Chief stating that there has been no lapse in the investigation into a case involving alleged sexual harassment of a woman who was injured in an accident in Kayamkulam, officials said on Monday.
State Police Chief Ravada A Chandrasekhar had earlier sought a detailed report after the victim raised concerns that the investigation was not progressing properly. She had alleged that her confidential statement had not been recorded and that a medical examination had not been conducted even more than a week after the incident.
Background
The incident took place on April 4, when the woman, who was travelling with a family friend, met with an accident near KPAC Junction.
Police said Sinil Sabad, a trader from Kayamkulam, allegedly sexually harassed the woman while she was being transported to hospital following the accident.
According to sources at Police Headquarters, District Police Chief M P Mohanachandran submitted the report on Sunday night, stating that there was no procedural lapse and that the investigation was proceeding properly.
Officials said Sabad was released on bail as the offence charged carries a punishment of less than seven years. A petition was also filed before the court on April 7 seeking permission to record the victim’s confidential statement, which is still pending.
The report further stated that witness statements have already been recorded and that the investigation remains on track.
The case was registered at Kayamkulam police station after the woman informed doctors that she had been sexually harassed by Sabad while being taken for treatment.
Police added that once the court records the victim’s confidential statement, the accused will be questioned again, and further action will follow based on the evidence gathered during the investigation.
