All government programmes scheduled for Sunday and Monday have been suspended in the wake of the Karur stampede tragedy. As a mark of respect to the victims, Chief Minister MK Stalin cancelled all official events and also put DMK functions on hold.

Rushing from Chennai to Karur, the Chief Minister visited hospitals, spoke to doctors about the treatment being provided to the injured, and assured the victims and their families of the best possible care.

Stalin also announced financial assistance — ₹10 lakh each to the families of those who lost their lives, and ₹1 lakh each for those undergoing treatment.

According to Suganthy Rajakumari, the state’s Director of Medical Education, at least 39 people were killed in the stampede during a Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) rally in Karur. Two patients remain in critical condition on ventilator support.
