Kappad: The Kappad beach once again received the ‘Blue Flag’ certificate, an eco label issued by Denmark International Foundation For Environment Education. Kappad beach is the first beach in the entire state to receive the recognition. The same beach had received the certification three years earlier as well. Beaches in Karnataka including Kasarkod beach in Honavar and the Padubidri in Udupi had received the coveted ‘Blue Flag’ in the past.

Overall, eight beaches in India have received the recognition. For receiving the certificate, 33 clauses shall be met. This includes coastal line cleanliness and security in the beaches. Effective services and environmental measures are also vital for receiving the certificate.

The inspection as part of the certification is carried out by a jury consisting of eminent environmentalists and scientists. Meanwhile, district collector Snehil Kumar Singh said that “Kappad beach was conferred with the prestigious title taking into consideration its environmental friendly approach, proper use of solar energy, effective waste disposal mechanisms and protection of biodiversity.”

The collector also stated that the Kappad beach is one of the cleanest beaches in the world.

It should be noted that 30 women staff are engaged in cleaning up the Kasaragod beach on a daily basis.
