Kannur: The Taliparamba Additional District and Sessions Court in Kannur on Thursday sentenced Saranya to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of ₹1 lakh for killing her 18-month-old son by throwing him into the sea.

The court said the case did not fall under the “rarest of rare” category, but observed that a mother killing her own child by throwing him from a sea wall warranted the maximum punishment of life imprisonment.

The crime took place on February 17, 2020. Sharanya, who was living separately from her husband, killed her son Viyaan as she believed the child would be an obstacle to her relationship with her boyfriend, Nithin. She allegedly called her husband home, made him sleep, and later took the child out and committed the crime.

According to the prosecution, Sharanya first threw the child into the sea, but when he survived and cried, she returned, picked him up, and threw him again against the sea wall, killing him.

The court acquitted Nithin, the second accused, citing a lack of evidence. He had been charged with conspiracy and related offences, but the prosecution failed to prove his involvement.
