Police say Govindachamy planned the escape days in advance. The prompt sharing of information and public vigilance led to his quick capture

Kannur: Kannur City Police Commissioner Nidhinraj IPS told media that Govindachamy had been planning his escape from jail for the past few days. When he was apprehended, police recovered tools believed to have been used in the escape attempt.
The Commissioner praised the police and the public for their vigilance and precision in the operation. He noted that 3 individuals provided highly accurate information and extended his gratitude to them and the media for helping spread the news quickly.
According to the Commissioner, the police were alerted about Govindachamy’s escape shortly after 6.30 am. The accused was caught within 3 and a half hours of receiving the alert.
“Following the escape, the police launched a swift and vigilant search operation. Information was shared promptly across the state, and the media played a key role in raising public awareness. It is believed the escape occurred between 4.15 am and 5.00 am. CCTV footage was reviewed and public tips were pursued. Based on one such tip about his presence near an abandoned building, a search led to the discovery of the accused in a nearby well,” the Commissioner said.
He added that the police are investigating whether Govindachamy received help during his escape. “Preliminary findings indicate that the accused had been preparing for the escape over the last few days. A case has been registered by Kannur Town Police,” he said.
