Vaikom: Kanam Rajendran was not just a visionary leader, he was also someone who stood shoulder-to-shoulder with all party workers. An instance of his unique personality is this story of how he bought the house of CPM founding leader and freedom fighter P. Krishna Pillai.
Neither the party workers nor affiliates knew about this move made by Kanam. After all the proceedings were done, an announcement was made that the communist party Kerala unit had bought the plot of land and the adjoining house that was once Krishna Pillai’s home. The party state council directly bought the 16.5 cents land by paying the full price.
Krishna Pillai was born in Vaikom. The plot was partitioned in 1927 and later sold at a rate of Rs 15 per cent. The house was demolished. After being bought and sold by many, the plot was finally bought by the communist party in August 2020.
The CPI and CPM, which both claim the legacy of Krishna Pillai, had been trying to buy this plot for a long time. Kanam Rajendran was directly involved in all the proceedings for this purpose. The party decided to rebuild the house and preserve it as a memorial. The monument includes a study centre, library, seminar hall, etc. However, Kanam left this world without seeing the completion of this dream project.
