Thiruvananthapuram: Senior Congress leader and Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor turned 70 on Monday, March 9. Tributes and birthday wishes poured in from across the political spectrum for the diplomat-turned-politician, who is widely celebrated for his multilingual prowess and global influence.

Born in London in 1956 with roots in Kerala’s Palakkad district, Tharoor has carved a unique niche in Indian public life. Often referred to in Kerala as a "Vishwa Pauran" (Global Citizen), his three-decade career at the United Nations and his subsequent entry into Indian politics in 2009 have made him one of the most recognisable faces in the country.

A "terrific" birthday present
 

While Tharoor noted that the day itself would be a "usual working day”, he took to social media to express his delight over India’s victory in the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.
"Celebrating my 70th birthday a day in advance with India's magnificent win... And another incredible performance, for the third match in a row, by my Thiruvananthapuram hero Sanju Samson! What more could one ask for?!!" Tharoor posted on X
 

 

.A distinguished legacy

Since winning the Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha seat in 2009, Tharoor has maintained a strong hold on the constituency. Known for his prolific writing and exceptional oratory skills, he has managed to garner respect from both allies and political rivals.

Responding to the milestone, the three-time MP jokingly remarked to a local TV channel, "I have become a senior citizen. That’s the big news."
