IUML leader Sayed Hyderali Shihab Thangal, 74, passes away

Kochi: State President of Indian Union Muslim League Sayed Hyderali Shihab Thangal, 74, passed away at the Little Flower hospital in Angamali here on Sunday. He was undergoing treatment for cancer at the hospital for some time. His condition worsened by Saturday afternoon.

He is also the incumbent president of the Darul Huda Islamic Academy. He is also the Vice President of the EK faction of Samastha Kerala Jamiyyathul Ulama, one of the Sunni Muslim organisations in Kerala.

He was born on June 15, 1947, to the Pukkoya family of Panakkad in Malappuram. He is the third son of PMSA Pookkoya Thangal and the younger brother of Sayed Mohammed Ali Shihab Thangal and Sayed Umerali Shihab Thangal.

He took over the presidency of the Muslim League in August 2009 following the death of his brother Sayed Muhammad Ali Shihab. He continued in this position for 13 years. He was the Malappuram district president of the Muslim League for 25 years.

He started his career by becoming the president of the Nurul Ulama, a student organization in Malappuram. He became the founding president of Samastha's student body, the SSF when it was formed in 1973. He continued in this position until 1979. In 1983, he became the Malappuram district president of the Muslim League.

He is also the President of many religious institutions, orphanages and organizations.
