Kochi: The Italian government has made a move with the central and state governments to settle the case against the Italian marines, who shot and killed two fishermen off the Kerala Coast in 2012.

According to reports, the three governments have taken action to settle the case by paying a compensation of Rs 10 crore to the kin of the victims.

Rs 4 crore each will be given to the dependents of the two deceased fishermen namely Kollam native Valentine Jalastin and Kanyakumari native Ajesh Pink. Rs 2 crore will be given to the boat owner Freddy for the damages.

The discussions for settling the case were initiated earlier at the government level. As directed by the centre, discussions were held between the Kerala government and Italian embassy. Though Kerala demanded a compensation of Rs 15 crore, Italy declared that they will give Rs 10 crore.

The move to settle the case was taken followed by the order of the International Arbitral Tribunal.

In the verdict issued in May, the tribunal pronounced that everyone on the boat was eligible for compensation. The tribunal also asserted that the Italian marines should not be prosecuted in India.

Meanwhile, others onboard the boat have filed a complaint with the centre and state governments over the bid to settle the case by violating the order of the tribunal.

There were 11 people on board the boat when the firing took place. The members in the boat included a 14-year-old boy named Prijil. A complaint seeking compensation for the boy was also filed before the government.

Deceased fisherman Jalasin’s wife and two children will get Rs 4 crore from Italy while the other fisherman Ajesh Pink’s two sisters will receive Rs 4 crore. Earlier, a compensation of Rs 2 crore was given to the family.

The fishermen were shot and killed by the Italian marines on February 15, 2012 at Neendakara in Kollam.
