Kozhikode: The Kozhikode Corporation has served a notice to KM Shaji MLA over the illegal building extensions of his residence in Maloorkunnu. The notice asks him to furnish an explanation at the earliest.
Kannur block panchayat president Pamanabhan had filed a complaint with the Vigilance department that K. M. Shaji had taken a bribe of Rs 25 lakh to grant Plus Two at a school in Azhikode constituency. Based on this, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) started an investigation to find out the MLA’s sources of income. The ED sought a report including the value of the house, total area and plan as part of its inquiry to find if the MLA had amassed wealth illegally.
Following the inspection, Kozhikode Corporation officials found that the house measured to be over 5,500 square feet though permission was granted for only 3200 sq ft. The complete plan was submitted in 2016. However, Shaji did not respond to the notice sent to regularise the construction which was undertaken without permission. As such the corporation did not grant a number to the house.
Corporation officials said that the additional construction has been undertaken on the third storey of the house.
A team of corporation officials led by Executive Engineer Ramesh Kumar measured the MLA’s house near Maloorkunnu on Thursday. The move was based on the ED directive seeking a report on the value of K. M. Shaji’s house. The report will be submitted on October 27.
