Patient dies after ambulance crashes into wall in Idukki; driver, two others injured

Idukki (Kerala): A 75-year-old man being shifted to a private hospital in Kattappana died after the ambulance carrying him crashed into a roadside wall early Friday, police said.

The deceased was identified as Rajan MK of Chakkupalam.

Rajan had been admitted to a private hospital in Anakkara with breathing difficulties. His condition later turned critical, following which he was being shifted to a hospital in Kattappana.

The accident occurred around 5 am at Parakkadavu near Kattappana, when the ambulance crashed into a wall along the roadside.

Rajan was taken to the hospital after the accident but succumbed to his injuries, police said.

Driver, two others injured

Ambulance driver Tijo, 45, was injured in the accident and is undergoing treatment at a hospital.

Two other passengers, Jayanthi and Joyal, also sustained injuries. One suffered a head injury, while the other sustained minor bruises. Both were discharged after receiving first aid, officials said.

Police probe underway

Preliminary information suggested that the driver may have fallen asleep at the wheel, possibly leading to the accident, police said.

Kattappana police have registered a case against Tijo and launched an investigation into the incident.

Rajan's body has been kept at the private hospital in Kattappana and will be handed over to his relatives after the post-mortem examination, police said.
