Roshy stumbles in sixth battle; Roy becomes Idukki’s guardian with historic ‘Hand’ victory!

Idukki: In the scorching political heat of Idukki, Roshy Augustine has faced a stinging defeat. The fall of the "giant tree" that had dominated this constituency for a quarter of a century was not entirely unexpected, yet the 2026 mandate stands as one of the most major upsets in Kerala’s political history.

For the first time since 1987, a Congress candidate has triumphed in Idukki under the 'Hand' symbol. Reclaiming a seat that had been ceded to various Kerala Congress factions for the past 38 years was a long-held dream for the Congress. By strategically taking the seat back from its allies and fielding a widely acceptable candidate like Roy K Paulose, the UDF had won half the battle before the first vote was cast. Finally, the ‘Hand’ symbol flies high once again in Idukki.

The fall of the ‘People’s MLA’

Roshy Augustine, the "People’s MLA" who had secured five consecutive victories since 2001, finally lost his footing. Despite his personal influence in every village and his record as a mild-mannered Minister, the 65% drop in his majority during the 2021 elections was a warning sign that the tide was turning. Roy K Paulose has effectively brought a 25-year political era to a close.

Roy capitalises on anti-incumbency

Roy K Paulose entered the fray as a fresh face offering new hope. His simplicity and grassroots connection helped convert mounting anti-incumbency into votes. The momentum from the UDF’s previous local body performance and Dean Kuriakose’s massive Lok Sabha majority provided the necessary tailwind. Rather than high-level politics, Roy spoke to plantation workers and tribal communities about their very survival.

Decisive issues: Wildlife and land rights

• Wildlife conflict: The failure of the LDF government to curb frequent wild elephant and boar attacks on crops and lives created deep resentment.
• Land rights: The perennial issue of title deeds (Pattayam) and the over-interference of the Forest Department turned settler farmers against the ruling front.
• Plantation crisis: Falling prices for rubber, cardamom, and tea, coupled with stagnant wages for plantation workers, heavily favoured the UDF.
• Health and infrastructure: The backwardness of the healthcare sector, requiring residents to travel miles for basic treatment, fueled the "stagnation" narrative against the incumbent.

The youth factor and electoral shifts

The "brain drain" of thousands of youths to the Gulf, Europe and Bengaluru due to a lack of local jobs became a potent weapon for the UDF. First-time voters leaned heavily towards Roy, seeking educational and employment opportunities within the district. In addition, the removal of approximately 20,000 “double and fraudulent” entries from the voter list ensured a cleaner contest, which the UDF camp believes was crucial to their comfortable victory.

Caste and alliance dynamics

While the settler Christian vote returned to its traditional UDF roots, the friction between the Jose K Mani and P J Joseph factions of the Kerala Congress also hurt Roshy. NDA candidate Pratheesh Prabha made inroads into the LDF’s traditional Ezhava and Tamil-origin vote banks, further clearing Roy’s path.

As the "Roshy era" ends, Roy K Paulose faces the daunting task of finding permanent solutions to Idukki’s wildlife conflicts and land right struggles.
