Balussery: Co-education is not practiced in several colleges in Kerala despite heated discussions on gender equality. A survey conducted in 2019-20 by the Higher Education Council revealed that there 65 women's colleges including four in the government sector in the state.
Majority of the women's colleges in the aided sector started many years ago and they are still reluctant to implement co-education. Most of the colleges are in the private sector and thety obtained affiliation recently. Among the women’s colleges in Kerala, 38 colleges are in rural areas and 27 are in urban areas.
However, the men's colleges later started giving admission for women to PG courses and later to UG courses also. Though three men's colleges under Mahatma Gandhi University were made mixed colleges, certain courses are still reserved for men.
