Thrissur: The College of Veterinary and Animal Sciences, Mannuthy, will be hosting a free medical camp from May 13 to 18 aimed at detecting heart diseases in dogs. The initiative comes in response to a concerning rise in heart ailments among canines. The camp will offer comprehensive tests and examinations, including ECG and echocardiogram, to assess the cardiac health of dogs.

An uptick in heart valve disorders, blocked blood vessels, and enlarged hearts has been observed in dogs. Experts emphasise the importance of early detection, highlighting the potential threat to the lives of affected animals. Often, treatment is sought only when the condition becomes severe.

Heart disease tends to be more prevalent in dogs aged over four years. Dr. A. Aishwarya from the clinical department of the College cited age as a primary contributing factor to heart issues in dogs. Alongside maintaining a balanced diet and regular exercise, routine medical check-ups are essential.

According to a study conducted by postgraduate students from the Clinical Department of the College, early-stage recognition of heart diseases in dogs remains inadequate, despite the observed increase. However, prompt diagnosis offers prospects for effective treatment.

Early symptoms of heart disease in dogs include excessive barking, coughing, sudden fainting, and seizures. Smaller breeds, such as Dachshunds, are more prone to valve failure, whereas larger breeds like Dobermans and German Shepherds are at higher risk of developing enlarged hearts.
