Malappuram: The Kerala State President of the Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) will announce the party's candidate for the Rajya Sabha on Monday. The decision will be made at a state leadership meeting in Thiruvananthapuram at 10 am.
Supreme Court Advocate and Kerala Muslim Cultural Centre (KMCC) leader Haris Beeran's name is in the limelight as the most probable candidate. Other candidates under active consideration include IUML State General Secretary P M A Salam, Muslim Youth League National General Secretary Adv Faisal Babu, and State General Secretary PK Firos.
The meeting is being held in Thiruvananthapuram because many leaders are present there due to the ongoing Assembly session. Kerala State President of IUML, Panakkad Sayyid Sadiq Ali, will also be arriving there after his foreign visit.
IUML had demanded a third seat during the Lok Sabha elections, following which Congress informed that it would allocate a winnable seat to the UDF in the three vacant Rajya Sabha seats. Hence, by winning the seat, IUML will gain another Rajya Sabha member along with P. V. Abdul Wahab. This would increase the number of IUML MPs to five, including three in the Lok Sabha.
