Mariyamma, the viral family photo

Pathanamthitta: A picture of a big family smiling after gathering around the mortal remains of a grandmother had sparked varied discussions on social media. Mallappally native Babu Umman, a relative of the demised Mariyamma clarified that their intention was not to go viral.

Mariyamma had happily lived for the past 95 years. In all these years, she loved her children and grandchildren profusely. It had been a year since she was bedridden. “Following her death, the only thing left for us to do was to pray by recalling the days spent with her. The photo was taken to remember those moments,” said Babu Umman.

All the family members had participated in the prayers prior to funeral. The photo was captured by around 2.15 am on Friday, soon after the prayers. The photo was not unexpected. It was the family’s wish to take a snap and save it, added Umman.

“The people who cannot acknowledge the picture are those who have seen only tears after death. Instead of lamenting, the dead have to be bid adieu merrily. We have done the same. The photo which was shared in the family WhatsApp group has leaked and went viral. Though many people have raised comments cornering us, we do not have any complaints to anyone,” said a family member.

Mariyamma’s husband was a priest at CSI church. Currently, there are two bishops and two priests in this huge family of Mariyamma. Minister V Sivankutty had also shared this photo on his Facebook page by appreciating the family.
