The Kerala Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) has launched a new initiative, Virtual PRO (Public Relations Officer) system, designed to streamline services and address queries related to the department.
Transport Minister KB Ganesh Kumar introduced the system, which offers a range of online services.
The Virtual PRO system has been developed under the government’s "Campus Industries" project. Students from Government Polytechnic College in Kalamassery, Vismaya Media Institute in Kozhikode, and Skill Age Digital Academy in Malappuram collaborated on the project. These institutions will also be responsible for maintaining and operating the system. The system is expected to gain traction on social media, as users can access information easily through QR codes.
In the future, the MVD’s goal is to introduce license kiosks that will allow individuals to print documents, including license renewals. These kiosks will work by entering license details and receiving a printout directly from the machine.
Minister Ganesh Kumar explained that this method is already implemented in several foreign countries and aims to simplify processes for residents. The department intends to roll this out in partnership with private companies, who will be responsible for setting up and maintaining the kiosks. A nominal fee will be charged for the service.
To ensure security, the kiosks will require users to enter an OTP (One-Time Password) sent to the mobile number registered with the MVD, preventing the misuse of licences. The MVD plans to invite expressions of interest from companies interested in participating in this initiative.
As part of its ongoing digitalisation efforts, the MVD is gradually expanding its online services. At present, it conducts activities such as licence tests and vehicle fitness assessments, but future plans include the introduction of an automatic vehicle inspection system. Minister Ganesh Kumar also noted that the department is working towards digitalising driving licence tests, with the aim of making this a reality in the near future.
