Kottayam: Mar Joseph Powathil, the former Archbishop of Changanacherry Archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church, passed away at the age of 93 in a private hospital at 1.17 pm.
He was undergoing treatment for age-related ailments.
Powathil was born on August 14, 1930. His ordination was in 1962.
He succeeded Mar Antony Padiyara as Metropolitan Archbishop of Changanassery Archdiocese in 1985, having previously served as Bishop of Kanjirappally Diocese since 1977.
Since his retirement as Changanasery Archbishop in 2006, he has held the title of Metropolitan Emeritus.
Among the priests, he was also known as the Crown of the Church.
