Kozhikode: A proposed food truck project at three railway stations in the Palakkad division has run into uncertainty after the contracted company withdrew from the project.  

The Erode-based Jesi's Food Court, which had secured the contract for five years, has formally informed the Railways that it is withdrawing. The project was planned at Kozhikode, Palakkad and Tirur railway stations.

The plan was to set up a food truck, similar to a Tempo Traveller, with a kitchen and facilities to store and prepare food. A covered section alongside the truck was also proposed as a dining area.

According to the company, it would have to spend around Rs 16-17 lakh just on the initial investment. This would include purchasing the truck for storing food items and setting up the kitchen and other required facilities.

The company said it decided to withdraw after finding that it would not be possible to recover this investment and make a profit over the five-year contract period.

The same company had secured the contract for a rail coach restaurant project for Rs 33 lakh, which is also facing a hurdle.

The Railways has approached the Kerala High Court in connection with the matter. The court is expected to deliver its verdict on September 18.

Company officials have said they intend to implement the rail coach restaurant project themselves. The Railways, however, has said it will take a decision based on the progress of the case.
