Kanhangad (Kasaragod): A tragic incident was reported from Parakkalayi village, east of Kanhangad, where a farmer, his wife and their son were found dead after allegedly consuming acid. The deceased have been identified as Gopi (58), wife Indira (54) and son Ranjesh (34). Another son Rakesh (27) is in critical condition and is being treated at a hospital. Locals suspect the family may have taken the drastic step due to financial liabilities.

According to neighbours, the family had visited some relatives and also gone to a temple the previous day. Around 3 am, a phone call was received by Gopi’s brother’s wife. It is believed the call was made by Rakesh, who reportedly said, “Not feeling well, need to be taken to hospital.”

When relatives and neighbours rushed to the house, they found the three lying dead. Rakesh was taken immediately to the Government Medical College in Pariyaram, Kannur.

Ambalathara Inspector K P Shine stated that while debt is suspected as the reason, it cannot be confirmed, and further details are awaited for clarity.

Ranjesh and Rakesh had earlier worked in Dubai. Two years ago, they returned home and started a small business delivering groceries and daily-use goods to households. The business did not yield much profit, and they reportedly incurred huge financial losses. Locals said they had recently stopped the business and taken up daily wage work instead.
